Cicada Market Hua Hin
Art, Food and Local Talent all combine to make Cicada Market Hua Hin a must visit weekend destination
Cicada Market is easily Hua Hin’s most popular weekend night market. Unlike most night markets in Thailand this one is a little different it’s more organised, offers a great variety of fresh foods, local crafts and has live music and shows in its own amphitheater.
Hoards of visitors arrive each evening from as far away as Bangkok to enjoy the food, entertainment and soak up the atmosphere at this vibrant market.
Opened in 2010 and spread over four acres Cicada manages to mix food, artisan crafts and live entertainment in a combination that is unique to the area.
Food
The food court has a wide selection of dishes from around the world (both western and asian). Cooked in street style stalls you can watch it being prepared right in front of you.
Sample foods from Thailand, Korea, China and Vietnam all in one place and when you’re finished check out some of the delicious deserts on offer. The coconut ice cream is highly recommended.
You’ll need to buy some coupons from one of the payment stalls when you enter. Just make sure that you hand any that you have left over back for a refund when you leave. You need to do this on the same day otherwise you won’t get your money back.
If you fancy a drink then stop off at one of the trendy bars.
Shopping
The market is a showcase for local designers, students and artisans who set up small stalls around the market. This is a great place to pick up a unique souvenir to take back home.
The quaint little stalls provide a varied selection of handmade craft such as antiques, bags, clothing, jewelry, bamboo bowls, teddy bears, leather goods, ukuleles, designer dog and cat collars.
You’ll find local artists ready to draw a portrait or make a caricature of you. One stall will make a wax mold of your hands.
Fancy watching glass blown animals being made or someone making minuscule figurines from clay, then look no further. There’s plenty of talent around.
Live Entertainment
Cicada market has its own amphitheater and there are regular shows or live music throughout the night. The entertainment is normally free to view but you may be required to take a ticket to reserve a seating space if the night is busy.
You’ll normally find some street dancers ready to show off their moves by the fountain area.
Art Gallery
There is an art studio near the food stalls where you can admire or purchase some local pieces.
Getting There
Located a little way south of town in Khao Takiab, close by the Hyatt Regency, it is easily reached using the local Songthaews (green buses) and Tuk-Tuks.
Beware though, if you are thinking of driving there then you won’t be alone. Hundreds of cars and large buses turn up each night vying for a parking place and even though there are a few make-shift parking lots you may still find yourself looking elsewhere to park up so get there early.
Opening Times
Open in the evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only.
Friday: 4.00 – 11.00 pm
Saturday: 4.00 – 11.00 pm
Sunday: 4.00 – 10.00 pm
The official opening time is 4:00 pm but most vendors are still setting up stalls at that time. If you’re looking to eat then it’s best to arrive between 6:00 to 7:00 pm by which time most of the stalls have food prepared and it’s still not too busy.
Things start to wind down around 10:30 but they’ll still be some hangers on after this.
