How to Make Your Own Krathong
Making your own Krathong (decorated flower float) is a great way to personalize Loy Krathong, especially if you have kids, and it’s not too hard to do. So if you want to infuse Loy Krathong with your own creativity and make a more memorable day then check out the video above.
The presenter makes it look very easy and in reality it will probably take you longer to find all the objects you need to make it than the actual construction of the float.
What You’ll Need
- A slice of banana tree trunk
- Several banana leaves
- A candle
- Some incense sticks
- Decorative flowers
- Pins, clear tape and a pair of scissors
- A little patience
How to Make the Krathong
Start with a slice of banana tree trunk and cover it with some banana leaves cut to shape.
Take another strip of leaf and fold it into a double triangle, a little like making a paper plane. Overlap the lose ends so that it takes on the shape of a scoop then cut the ends straight with the scissors and pin it through the center to the float.
Continue to make and pin more of the leaves around the outside (top and side) of the float until everything is covered.
Tape a couple of pins to the outside of the candle and then secure it to the top of the float.
Add a few incense sticks and then decorate the remaining area with a collection of brightly coloured flowers. That’s it. Now you have a beautiful Krathong.
Tip
If you find the folding of the banana leaves to be too difficult then don’t worry. Just compromise and do your best. Shape some flat banana leaves and pin them directly to the float in your own design.
